Many moons ago my dad built a "foot stool". He just took some scrap 2x4's and nailed them together. He was not a carpenter, woodworker or builder in any way but it held together. My mom hated it, it wasn't sanded, stained or painted, just simply wood and nails. An "eye sore". At some point, my dad carved their names on this foot stool and started a heart. When he passed, my mom complained about that foot stool. She said that "she'd have to lug that thing around with her the rest of her life because of the carving". I told her that if she didn't want to keep the foot stool we could cut the carving section out, she didn't want to do that. Despite hating the foot stool, he built it and carved their names and she didn't want to lose the memory. I asked her if I could take it and minimally change it so that it wouldn't be an "eye sore" anymore. She allowed it but with strict guidelines of not sanding it smooth or altering the wood in any way. This is what I came up with.... Now it is placed out in the open as a sweet memorial. 🪽
